Cuomo: Keystone XL pipeline matters here, too

I was one among thousands who participated in sit-ins at the White House this month to demand that President Obama refuse a permit for the Keystone XL pipeline that corporate giant TransCanada hopes to build from the tar sands of Alberta to the U.S. Gulf Coast.

The proposed 2,000-mile pipeline would carry hot, sandy crude oil through Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma, to Texas refineries, where the refined oil would then be available to the highest international bidder.

From Aug. 20 to Sept. 3, more than 1,250 people chose to protest—and be arrested—outside the White House in Washington, D.C. The sit-in was the largest display of civil disobedience in the United States since the end of the Civil Rights era, and it marks a significant shift in strategy among environmental advocates who believe the country and the planet are about to cross a point of no return.
